Solar activity January 26-27

Many type III bursts were recorded by STEREO WAVES Ahead on January 26, betweeen 16 and 22 UT.

GOES 14 recorded high B level X-ray fluxes during that period of time.

Above is a detail of the SWAVES spectrum for January 27.

Many thanks to the Observatory Teams.

Io-D arc January 21 2010

The arc is visible in the STEREO WAVES Behind spectrum. The Io-D and Io-C regions are the result of radiation from the Jovian southern hemisphere. Io-D radiation comes from the leading side of the radiation cones of cyclotron masers near the Jovian auroral regions. Io-C is radiated from the lagging side of the cones.

This page shows other examples of recent Io-D events recorded by SWAVES.

Above is an Io-D event on November 6 2009.

Solar events at STEREO WAVES January 18 2010

The STEREO WAVES spectrum demonstrates the directionality of type III radiation. Frequently, the radiation recorded by the Ahead and Behind observatories is quite different.

Reiner et al., 2009 discuss possible beaming patterns, as shown above in a detail of their Fig. 1, for a December 7 2007 type III event. Note that the axis of the type III beam is generally tangent to the Parker magnetic field spiral at the source location.
